I dunno. The bird watching and reading about them might just be how he unwinds and such. Sometimes you might prefer to leave things in the arena of hobbies rather than careers, because making it into your job adds all kinds of constraints. This is why I've never pursued an art related career. Sure I like drawing, but I like drawing whatever I want to when I want to. Not what someone else tells me to and by a specific deadline.
