Yes he did tell her but while try no other way to prove it other than just telling "I am a boy" and she do not believe. And she SUPPOSE to not believe. So yes, she doing it earnestly.
And even if you take it serious, yes, she still earnestly. She just misunderstand because there are already a bunch of case where girls also say the "I am a boy" just like him.
