@Eschaton I believe there are types of ear plugs that mostly block out high frequency sounds (ie. Gun shots) which would work against the crazy making sound too as well as make everyday communication easier. Thing with that is that the gun culture in Japan is not even close to the one in America. Although it's mostly a hobby for hunting or leisure in Japan, not thought of as something necessary for defense (plus gun laws are stricter there). Still should be able to buy regular ear plugs easily though.
