I don't think she did a complete 180 on her personality, more like she still did have it - just gave up for a moment because of all the abuse. It was still there, a small little fire that now will start burning anew. We can see that from bits and pieces of her childhood, that she always wanted to be more than what everyone told her she should be

That can be the case for a lot of other stories out there but for this one in particular, it can only make sense if someone of higher authority and power can pull ebony out of prison and impending execution. And for the kingdom of Kalcass (considering how sexist it is), only men are the ones who hold that position. So it doesn't bother me all that much when he's the one who saved her and gave her a new life. I honestly can't imagine anyone else being able to pull her out of there other than the ML considering he has royal blood flowing in him... so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

From what we've seen so far, he's only given Ebony the opportunity to grow and spread her roots. It's up to her to see how far she can go. And that's fine by me.
