@Aniryu most guys, at least myself and others, don’t say it quite like that or mean anything, more.... “I really love seeing you smile because I want you to always be happy” kinda thing. So I do think some are overreacting to the “smile” kinda comments from guys in modern times

When he said "you're prettier when you smile", I thought it might stir some people up. For me reading this, he is watching her grow and he cares for Ebony so saying that meant that it's fine for her to smile and laugh as she wants.
But in context of modern times, if some guy that don't know me well enough said the same thing, I wouldn't feel the same way. I would feel offended, in fact.

Other than that, I think it's right for him to want her to grow and get more experience before falling in love. I am willing to wait for that development.

I get it. People want to see others smile/laugh because it makes them feel good too. Basic human reaction to feel content when others do. But it feels selfish.
I know it's not the way they meant to come off here, it's just not appealing to hear to me irl. Specially since it's a common pick-up line, it's even more of a joke.
