@mikaeldkamie I'm not sure we know exactly why yet.

It seems she is trying to influence the guy who has the power to determine who inherits the mansion. Apparently the Chancellor doesn't trust the Duke, or Sedell, so she is trying to get him to hand the mansion over to the widow by going through his secret lover. I guess she is trying to convince him that instead of letting the Duke, or Sedell get the mansion, it would be better for his faction if the widow gets it.
