Honestly, with the way things are now, I wouldn't mind at all if she gets together with his friend. After all, their current relationship is not based on love but lies on his part and co-dependence on her part. And two downers are certainly not healthy for each-other.

This is fucked if he stays spineless. Much needed development to see if MC is ready to man up and get his relationship to the next level even knowing all the problems that might appear from this (classmates discovering, his buddy Shige might think he's a traitor of his friends, her family might get involved in the future, future plans since they are 3rd years). It only gets harder from here on out.
