@millenialboomer The original LU manga ran from Apr 1998 to Dec 1999. 'Special' was released in December 2002. In both the first manga and the anime, Rail at the end mentioned that he still had one more job for Kane.
@Volphied oh wow, that was about the time the low budget animu released too. LN author still at work? I see that J-novel.club was able to do what I was dreaming about in the early 00's and finally bring Slayers over.
@millenialboomer Well, though the anime staff weren't literally swimming in money, it's still incorrect to call it "low budget". The 3D CGI that appeared in almost every episode was actually pretty expensive back then, and also revolutionary in its use. The hand-drawn animation issues were caused by a production process that started very, very late in schedule (and thus had to crunch their animators, both in Japan and South Korea), and some serious issues in communication between upper management,. the staff and the subcontractor. This kind of problem couldn't be solved by just throwing money at it.
