About your question, It's probably because of the "ideal" beauty standard in Japan, and because glasses have strong nerd/loser connotations.

Well this is nice. She's a geek and dork at heart, but one who's able to treat herself, and who doesn't really get embarrassed or shy. Because of this, Mr. Knight's entrance and conversation with her was less the cliched flirtation and more just good chemistry.

I can't get a good read on this Emilia woman though. The way she's acted is certainly tactless, but not unfeasible. Is she being malicious about this, or just air-headed with Tobias being the jackass that ups that idiocy by an order of magnitude?
