I've read Harry Potter fan fiction that was less transparent than this. Will the girl that wins the MCs heart have a striking resemblance to the author? Of course, she's the only one who can understand his tortured existence because likewise she can only feel something when she's with him!

For the entire thing so far, all I can really say for sure is that I think the author just likes happy/sad juxtapositions a lot.

Mangadex has taken the interesting (?) approach of only listing the status of the series in the originating country (in this case Japan). In theory the final chapters of stuff are supposed to be marked with the little "End" tag, so you can usually tell which translations are complete using that, although occasionally people forget to add them.
Last I'd heard there was at least the vague intent to add per-language completion statuses to help clear up the ongoing confusion an this point, though my info may be out of date.

Well, I don't even actually disapprove of self-insert fiction per se (even if it's a common feature of a lot of really bad writing), but this doesn't seem like that at all—I mean, we'll see, but I was kind of expecting the current girl to stick around and remain the love interest. (Just, having her move in next door seems an odd choice otherwise, plot-trajectory-wise.)
And I have no real desire to be in her shoes, and it doesn't feel like I'm supposed to want to either.
