And I suppose the mangaka is aiming for the "Friendly Rivalry"-trope, but is kinda failing to show the "friendly" part.

There's nothing friendly about them. He's just a smug asshole who acts like a jerk and yet gets all the girls swooning after him, has lots of magic power, and gets perfect grades. He's a jerk. And it sucks most of all, because the way he's set up in the story he's just going to keep on being an arrogant unlikeable dickwad the whole way through, will somehow end up getting together with our heroine while never changing in the slightest, and never once get humiliated the way smirking shitheads like him should. He has no redeeming features whatsoever, yet we're supposed to tolerate him acting like this? He can shove that damn fire up where the sun doesn't shine.

Let me guess the reason she can't get #1 must be because she is a commoner while the other guy is a noble so even if they both get perfect score the guy will be placed as #1 and she will be always #2

My goodness people...honestly,sure the male lead is a a bit of a jerk but you should know how the shoujo genre rolls.
And he's not even THAT much of a jerk ,well of course you don't just attack someone like that BUT i've seen my share of male leads who are jerks .Like that male guy in "the duchess in the attic". That is someone you have to hate.

@Kusarin Get rid of the fantasy setting and stick the characters in a contemporary setting (so he just becomes a much more obnoxious Kei Takishima) and you'd have the most cliche of the shoujo school life library. There's nothing unique (therefore interesting) about this dynamic and thus it will get boring fast.

But then there are people who think Hermione/Ron in Harry Potter "worked well" so different tastes.
