Seems to me that he's looking for allies, and he's simply developing the MC to become a competent adversary of the church

Huh so he still does thing to be in favor of the church but at the same time uses it as a convenience to develop the MC to be an actual threat to the church in the future.

@ad_chiat I actually kinda like that guy. It feels like he is intentionally playing the role of the antagonist in order to develop the MC. Who knows, I might be wrong.

I hope he's intentionally putting on a front to try and get the witches to fight for themselves, and to pursue his own agendas by any means necessary. I don't think he's strictly with the church, more so that fact that it's just the quickest route to power.

Hopefully he ends up fighting with the good guys by the end. He's definitely one of the most interesting characters potentially if he's handled right.
