Calling it a genre is ridiculous. The only reason I can think of that justifies giving it its own genre is that they are traditionally videogame-based and yet don’t fit into the traditional videogame genres. However, this isn’t necessarily true, as a few isekai take no influence from games at all and focus merely on the fantasy aspect.
