this post sucks and I wrote it while drunk and don't remember shit about it lol. Sorry everyone.

Lmao copy paste this in the Suggestions Forum my dude. More people interested in site improvements will see it.

i feel familiar with this kind of post...... hmnmm where is it eh ?????

aha, its on MAL too

Also, i am wondering this, is MD have same system as Baka-Updates ??? hmmm🤔🤔🤔

My first thought was this post with similar concerns about ratings on mangadex:
Remove or change manga rating, which has a vague staff-added [Planned] now.

Since the pinned Suggestions thread also has this:
Search within ranges (score of 7 to 8)
we can assume that there won't be plans to outright remove ratings, leaving a vague "planned change" on how exactly the rating function will be affected.

Really interesting, maybe you could try to write a book about this subject.
You seem to be an expert.

@BlackGeneral
I think another user had claimed to have enough material for a book, but last I heard, no publishing deals have appeared yet.

inb4 the word toxic is dropped.

If you don't get it you haven't lurked in the suggestions forum long enough.

Ratings in general are unsalvageable I think. For example someone can read a chapter of a manga and think "this is shit" and rate it 1- you can't say that's invalid, cuz it's someone's personal opinion.
A better way to help people judge a title could be to add a reviews section separate from normal comments, maybe ...

Ah yes, I remember that. If my memory serves me right, I think that the OP in that thread also said something about the justification for eating babies. Good times, good times.

A simple improvement to weed out "personal opinions" that don't reflect on the series but "I read the first chapter and I hate this genre, thus 1" can easily be circumvented by having acclaimed people give it a score from a critic's perspective.

This means the site either has to invest into "acclaimed" critics giving their opinions + writing a spoiler free review. Which means they either get paid for it, or are chosen through a more, umm, holistic approach and through community effort. Kinda like Wikipedia editors. (the ones that do it for the knowledge, and the ones that are getting paid for more meticulous touch-ups)

Edit: Just to make it clear, we'd have 2 scores a "public opinion" and a "critics' opinion". Reviews should be able to be filtered, or have the critics' review(s) pinned on top. <- pretty much how it is for video games and movies.

@lead36
There's no way MangaDex ever puts any amount of money into paid reviews.
Staff already runs zero (real non-April Fool's Day) advertisements, so how on earth could they be expected to pay out to reviewers consistently in the first place?
And choosing which trusted users become placed on a pedestal to have their opinions elevated above the rest is a can of worms in it of itself.

@justforthelulz you either accept that those are the only ways of getting a weighted opinion or you pass up on all of that and accept skewed ratings

As always, i'm not in this for any sort of argument, I just give professional advice whenever I feel like it.

@Halo
They could pay for it with their bodies
I'm pretty sure we're talking about incentives for reviewers, not disincentives.

I'd like to know what your qualifications are, given that the standard definition is, "A professional is a member of a profession or any person who earns their living from a specified professional activity."

Newgrounds has an "experience system" where the more you rate stuff, the more "trustworthy" your opinion is(?), so you have level 60+ old users like Cyberdevil and some other guy with Jack Skellington as their pfp that have literally thousands of reviews of art, games, animation and music that get uploaded to NG daily, and then there's me at level 4 with like 5 reviews. Of course, NG encourages you to write a review for your rating, just so you don't go around rating zeros and fives everywhere without valuable reason. Although, this system has been refined for over a decade.
