Well, there's truth to what you're saying. There is no conflict, and as such the protagonist doesn't really have to do anything, so there's nothing wrong with what he's doing (though he should at least try to learn the language, or try to find some other means of communication; his lack of agency is depressing (sure, he tried to do some stuff like you pointed, and Mary stopped him, but they're all minor things and nothing really relevant)).
But that doesn't change the fact that Mary is literally carrying the story by herself. Remove her, and I dont think there will be many readers who will stick around. Is it too much to ask for a protagonist that's interesting? One that, even if Mary was removed, the story would still be interesting and engaging? Not necessarily someone powerful, or resourceful, but at least someone with a personality, someone whose qualities don't only amount to being harmless and having no ill will in him (it'd still be a slice of life, the theme of the story wouldn't change, but at least we'd have an interesting protagonist). I mean, I understand where you're coming from, but I still see don't see Ren ( I think that's what he's called) as protagonist material.
@dummyaccount12345
I honestly don't see a story here if you removed MC either and that would make sense. But, for the language thing, I totally get. I 100% think that will be resolved at some point in the story though because honestly, it would be much stranger if it didn't. For now though, it's gonna stay that way because it is its one angle that makes it unique from other stories in the genre and it is kinda in the title. So like, imagine if this was a 50 chapter series and at ch. 11 the MC already understands the language. I'd call that pretty weird too. I'd just give that one time.
MC being bland is kinda whatever for me. I don't feel strongly for him like your saying but I enjoy their dynamics for what they are. MC is your usual run of the mill student from a society resembling our own and Mary is a demon queen. Then there's the hero party who thus far have been small fish and hardly a threat to Mary.
@dummyaccount12345
I wouldn't really stick around if you suddenly remove the mc though, I like Mary and Ren's interactions, he is not the most marvelous person, but I don't dislike him.
@Mizumachi
Just don't even bother. No matter what's said he's not gonna change his stance especially from the way he worded his last message. It's not a discussion for him at this point, its just provocation which is a shame.
@musicfreak12
Maybe it is to keep him from going back to his old world? Based on the drawings shown by the witch and the fact that he went back once again and then back to the castle(which was when he was given the crystal and shown the drawings).
Do correct me if I got something wrong.
Are you talking about me? I don't believe I worded my last comment strongly, nor did I write it with the intention to provoke anyone. In fact, I took a step back more than once, especially in my last comment. I've also avoided insulting anyone or using any strong words. As far as I can tell, we were having a perfectly fine and civil discussion, so if you think I came off too strongly, know that it was not my intention.
I do, however, agree with you on one point: there's nothing left to discuss. We've each said what we wanted to say, and I don't think anyone will be able to change anyone's mind any further. My last comment was indeed meant to be my final one, but I felt the need to add this one to make sure I wasn't misunderstood. I like to end my discussions on a good note.
In any case, I had a good time. Sure, we didn't come to a consensus, but I think that's fine, since we got to share our views anyway.
@dummyaccount12345
No, no. My bad I didn't really specify, but I wasn't talking about you. In fact, I also enjoyed our discussion as well. You made very valid points and I don't really think our stances are very different. You didn't for example say... "You're just wrong, and unable to admit it".
@jsh020 There's also the Gabriel Dropout Hell pet possibility, Ryu stays cute but grows to be much larger than its demon girl master (see Vignette's pet Chappy).
I wonder how many more chapters till he will start learning more words as there has to be more to the story. Mary summoned him for a reason and I would think it has to do with her being lonely and something else as she does have a friend already, unless she wanted a husband.
@Mizumachi@allen133194
Oh. Okay then! No problem. Anyway, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had a good time. Now all we can do is to wait and see how exactly this manga will turn out.
@twinklecake It is a matter of opinion, because "useful" is a purely subjective descriptor. The one you're using in discussion is a particularly narrow one, one that clearly doesn't account for the fact that Mary, for example, seems to find him to be useful enough for her needs. There isn't just one definition of "useful" that applies equally to all situations.
@dummyaccount12345
LOL, sorry, didn’t notice that I didn’t type your full name
And also, although I don’t particularly agree with some of your points, I do respect it and think why others would think the same.
On another note, I love how y’all didn’t have a blockheaded argument and instead just had a fine nice one.
Lastly, @dummyaccount12345, at first, my opinion for you was a blockhead that liked these op mc’s, but after reading your comments I’ve come to the conclusion that your’e a nice person that has different opinions but nevertheless someone I’d love to have another “conversation” with.
