Actually, he's giving her a controlled release valve for her stresses, she would have otherwise grown into something much worse considering she was already favouring him from the outset. If he wasn't savvy enough to suggest the whole thing, Maria might have mentally turned him into her big brother and use him as a focus for her feelings.
