@Qelix it’s in the perspective of the MC considering not once had he notice those family photos that had been their even before he left, he has unconsciously blocked things related to his father even though his father had made efforts to be a father to all of them.

@Qelix It's a shitty family because they were extremely distant to the point of borderline emotional neglect. There is some serious dysfunction here despite things looking fairly benign. I mean think about it, really. Are you telling me they never ate together even on off days? Like okay, you work late, but do you work 7 days a week? You must at least have one day a week off of work? What are you doing then? Why are spending that time out of the house or locked up in your office?
And as you mentioned the grandparents are shitty too for just leaving the kids to themselves like that? What kind of person just thinks it's alright to let your direct close relatives, that you live with, eat by themselves on a daily basis unless they specifically asked to be left alone?
On top of that, it feels they didn't even really talk to the kids about why things were the way they were. Kids are smart enough to understand many things people don't give them credit for. So that's some grade A shitty communication there.

So if he feels like he was neglected as a child it's fairly reasonable to say he was until we a shown otherwise. Getting people who are normally off doing separate things together for group photos to fake some semblance of family unity does not invalidate all the time he and his little brother spent alone not even knowing why. So until we are shown that they did try to at least communicate the situation to them then he is in the right as far as I see it.

@Qelix so, to the point why it not the mother but father fault. It actually vary logic way of thinking, I bet you are not a asian.

It common sense that the man is the lead and breadwinner. While the woman do the housework and takecare of the kid and schooll stuff. And even if you not a asian, as you can see the mother is making dinner right now while the father sit there reading paper. It also mention she was working too, this usually also common sense if the family is poor. And she help the sister, that show she is the only one get in touch with the kid. Yes, two brother is left out but she do have time to prepare food for the kid.

I agree with this, especially the fake family unity photos. Just because everyone's in the photo, whether they smile or not, does not mean that they are a happy family. I imagine being a Japanese child would make it even less likely to defy parents to the extent of refusing to pretend to be happy in a family photo. And I do have experience with faking happy family photos.

i kinda get the perspective of the MC. Having the your perspective vs your parents perspective especially with a dick of dad. ive had times where i would almost ignorantly say something bad about but only later to find out he wasn't doing it for a bad reason. This made me feel like a dick even though i never said it, i felt really guilty about thinking about it
