I think translator is right, they don't seem to give a shit about who joins their sect so anyone who wants in just has to do chores or something. If someone super-talented showed up, it might be a different story, who knows.

It looked like there were a lot of problems with the recruitment method, really. That one girl clearly got sent to the outer sect only due to family politics type shit. "Chess" kid had the misfortune of running into an asshole that wouldn't have treated him fairly either way. Then they didn't even want to bother testing the MC. I guess she'll probably run into the guy she helped while doing chores, and maybe him or his master will notice something about her necklace?

I don't think the "weird fox child" was an asshole, though... I do think most of the cultivators shown so far are indeed assholes, though.
