@GabrielH that's the way I see it too. Why is it that creepy and not a classic ray of light/float to heaven that's I did not know.

Also why some ghost looks creepy af, but some of them looks normal/heavenly even. Like the cats, dead wife, and MC's Dad.
Creepy ones symbolize sinners/heavy guilt/unfinished business while the normal/heavenly ones symbolize virtuous person/acceptance of death?
If so, then that queue to get eaten might be a doorway to hell, or a way to get the souls cleaned before they can actually pass on for good

@Vegetablesucks I think I agree with your second guess. It's a way to get the souls cleansed so they can pass away. The purpose is unclear. Maybe because they'll reincarnate so it necessary to erase their memory?

And I think it's creepy because the modern world is heavily polluted with worldly desire or something? Because the fox god in past chapter is not exactly heavenly. And maybe the cats, dead wife, and mc's dad looks pure because their existence as ghost is still recent.
