The cats that die get stuck to him and then get corrupted by the mom's spirit is my guess. Or she's somehow able to kill the ones that are weak and don't make it to the vet. He did say that "so many have died"

Yeah, many other cultures have a similar concept since spider's web is associated with scheming, and hence also associated with women—because historically this was often the only available method to reach their goals (as they lacked physical power, wealth, and basic human rights almost universally until the previous century). Even if this particular apparition wasn't specific to Japanese folklore, let's admit it, the analogy is very much on the nose regardless.

Welp... i was so wrong about this guy that it is embarrassing, his mother was a type of her own in crazy, happy that he may be free.

This author is really good in the ancient art of bamboozlement, this is the second or third time that he/she throws such a curveball that it has made a 360 around me three times and hit me in the balls... and i am not even mad, this type of bamboozlement is so rewarding to feel.
