@gronkle My google-fu skills tell me that apparently the first edition of Dungeons and Dragons had pig orcs (allegedly, due to the illustrator misunderstanding Gygax describing orcs as "pig-headed").
In regards to the 'dogbold' idea, I believe it's due to a combination of a misinterpretation of an early version of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons where Kobolds were described as having a "doglike snout and mouth", as well as because the Wizardry series (which I have learned has had a HUGE influence on Japanese Fantasy) apparently also used the 'dogbold' interpretation.

I could always be wrong, tho
