It wasn't a question of "transphobia" whatever that is nowadays, but of people hating the genderswap trope which is not present here.

The backlash was not because of the character becoming female. The backlash was because it happened 20+ chapters in, after the character was already established. It would've been a much smoother transition point if the change occurred within the first few chapters.

I have to give props to the author for showing the realpolitik in full force here. Most everybody hate this alliance and the fact they basically were faced with a fait accompli, but because of the external force they have no other choice but to fight together shoulder to shoulder. You can just feel the discomfort.
