Murim Login - Ch. 18

I thought the Head Elder is his grandfather or was there a mistranslation in ch 17? Why would they be so afraid of him plotting against them then?

@Ademnd its a particular custom practiced within large clans that use the extended/joint families system in China to promote closer bonds.

typically in these ancient settings, with every succession of the family head position, the losers of that generation become part of the 'Elders' and then 'Great Elders' after another succession.
because of how "close-knit" the families are supposed to be, descendants of the 3rd generation typically also address their true grandfather's male siblings(including paternal male cousins) as 'grandpas' as well (normally no extra grandmas tho since those marry out~)

it might've been meant to be a type of brainwashing aka "chicken-soup-for-the-soul-bandaid" so the losers could feel better about themselves but this doesn't really do half a bird's crap about the individual's greed/powerlust(if any) or their partiality towards their own direct descendants

there were also REAL close-knit joint families but they tend to be in the lower classes and using the 'family name village' system where they they are independent families of one village instead of branches of one clan.
nowadays, we mostly stick to calling them "great-uncles". mostly.
