Maybe I’m just tired of women being kept in the dark in these stories (for “their own good” or the good of The Plot or whatever), but... I’m still irritated they told her jack squat. She’s obviously not stupid, and she’s not a child. It’s honestly sad that it’d be original to have a ML confer with the FMC as his equal & not deliberately withhold important info bc he thinks her lacking or incapable.

More importantly, it rlly irritates me this is framed as some sort of successful neglect play? Like negging to True Love. “Treat a woman like she doesn’t exist & she’ll realize how much she wants/needs you.” Give a woman the impression you’re going to replace her, & she’ll lose interest in the hobbies that define her. Yeah. A little too Twilight for me.

It sucks that all these romances with target audiences <18 keep pumping out the same old, distorted content.

It’d be nice if they made it abnormal for a fem lead to be lied to/cloistered/misled by her own love interest(s). & if they normalized young girls being given the same respect/independence as any boy of a similar background. But I won’t hold my breath

It’s also frustrating that Eli has so little agency. Everything falls into place because of the prince. Her choices and actions aren’t really presented until after the fact, like they’re asides, even though this is supposedly her story—isn’t she the MC?

And Eli WAS a child when the engagement began, and only apparently became an adult recently by this culture’s standards, so all this manipulation happened while she was a kid. It’s greasy. The power imbalance is too big.

All these men around her schemed a ton and made their own decisions about her life without her knowing. Like, wow. No communication whatsoever. She didn’t even have the chance to know what was up in the moment.
