This novel is extremely character-driven compared to your standard Jap light novel. Sure, there are events that seem to just happen to push the plot forward, but so is life. However, the cast's responses to those events are always as their personalities dictate. "Feel-good" readers who only want characters to act as they wish even if it's to the contrary of their personalities won't like this novel.

even though that's how Eris and Rudeus have always been all along.

I remember the Aisha's debacle when people raged at how she ended jumping Ars' bone, even though Aisha is very much a walking disaster of vulnerable, sexually-repressed manipulator waiting to happen. The sin of ending up with her nephew wraps up her character with a superb development, but nope, can't have that. Better have her stay as a virgin till death waiting on her Oniichan instead
