@LostWorld Then according to you, how should a mother look like? There are young mothers too. And since the author is Japanese, you should know that nanny to us Asians will be an old woman or at least middle-aged. We don't trust young people to look after our children. I was surprised to know that in the US, people actually pay young teenagers to look after their children. We usually ask our parents, relatives or the neighbors who also have children themselves.

I'm guessing that this new mother's face is almost constantly stuck in that expression against her will, whether purely for comedic effect or not. I've come across enough characters with permanent scowls to know better than to jump to assumptions based solely on facial expressions (I need at least a dreadful atmosphere or another character saying that they're filling dreadful chills in a not-played-for-laughs context).
