What even is this story?

What is it progressing toward? He's not getting to know the girls, he's not learning to be anything, and nothing is happening to him. It feels like it's a story about nothing.

I thought at first it was going to be about him growing to be someone these mafia girls could accept, but now I have no idea what it's supposed to be.
