After coming back and re-reading this I just realized all the flags the author had been setting out for Maho this whole time. Like her being the only one of Maria's friends to show any interest, or rather lack of disinterest, in him by stating him to be normal and her saying she wants to become a rich neet and the thoughtful look she got when Maria said she'd take care of his wife too.
