The etiquette isn't really such a big deal or anything complicated. The Japanese have plenty of etiquette demands of their own, compared to Europeans. Not to mention I doubt the French (or other European style) restaurants in Japan even demand or offer strictly European dining culture anyway. They would be adapted to the clientele. That's business. It's not like every restaurant could hope to stay in business by only catering to snobs.
