I'd rather say he's a naive country bumpkin who is more than familiar with the bad side of humanity, but very much so unfamiliar with culture or history. I mean, MC only heard about devils from reading books. Probably the grandparents were too overprotective, considering he seems to have zero life skills and has a far too soft personality compared to his competence (I mean, you can't brush off doing any magic ritual first-try successfully.
