@sneezemonkey I checked the raw and you're right. I mean it feels weird without even checking ("fighting magic item or thieves" lol). I guess the translator is translating 魔物 way too literal into "magic thing" and the proofreader is sleeping on the job. I mean even gtrans translated it to Monster.

edit: so i just read invader's post and apparently this doesn't go through a QC... it's okay i guess. Better start reading the raw rather than waiting again...

@kamishiniyari - you don't understand what "sage" means, do you? Sages are supposed to be wise, and it's quite common for them to be out of touch with common folk's concerns. In fact, pretty much all sages observed in anime are not quite sane.
In an RPG-like world, sages can be even worse off, where they are just very capable spellcasters who are often only interested in magic and have no concern for mortal matters.

The MC from Shikkakumon no Saikou Kenja is an excellent example. He is very much out of tune with the world's common sense, and there are hints he wasn't in tune with it even in the manapunk times of his past life. But it's not his problem, because he is an awesome magic-user and he is a battle maniac.

@flannan , but this particular MC aimed to be a normal adventurer, can't he at least be 'wise' enough to do research (or at least care) about common sense if he really has such an aim. Still doesn't cover the lack of brain that the character exhibited. Not knowing the standard is okay if he was still a sage since he probably doesn't wish to concern himself with mere mortals at that point, but there's no excuse when a sage - aimed to do something so simple - but failed because he failed to use his intelligence. Though this manga will probably be just a joke manga all throughout anyway, so be it.

I'm pretty sure while the mc was in line talking about where he was from, the tl made a mistake as the thought bubble should have been the mc's thoughts about accidentally slipping in telling too much info.

Also, why is he tl translating beasts as magic items?
