The controversy wasn't really about him being a rapist but rather about him supposedly murdering a shitton of chinese soldiers in his backstory (it wasn't outright stated but it's more likely that he fought against the chinese in the Second Sino-Japanese War than against the USA) which, coupled with past racist tweets, angered a bunch of people.

I don't remember not even the slightest implication that he took part of the Rape of Nanking, or even that he raped anyone or murdered civilians, though I do understand people associating that particular war with that event as soon as it's brought up.

Aside from that demon shapeshifting in what ever gender she likes (I'll believe her, when she says she is actually a female, as it would fit the harem route.), she tried to murder them on their last encounter and killed a lot of people. Not wanting to bed her under those conditions seems rather understandable. (It might be a trick to kill him after all.)
