Up until Chapter 10 I was still a bit conflicted about the evil, but now I get it. He's nearly totally snapped and is repeating the cycles of violence perpetuated upon him. The Princess & her family willingly slaughter innocence to an unprecedented degree, and the "villains" are not actually so.

Hmm… reminds me of another series I've read. Not quite as bloody, but it has its moments. Heh.
