The Japanese used was "パンツ" which means underpants, underwear, panties, etc. Basically any bottomwear meant to be worn under outer clothing, or in English, panties.

@DarkLordAlfie Umm... no, that's not it. Note even remotely. His mother has a tail. All the people in his mother's village had one. It's some kind of genetic trait, I think. And it is supposed to be a very trivial thing so that society's (over)reaction to it can be shown as an apt example of just how intolerant people can be of even the slightest deviation from the norm.

P.S. Now that I think about it, even the their newborn has a tail (refer to ch. 1). So genetic it is.

I don't think there's a wrong way to interpret what the tail represents. Works like this is intended to invite discussion so as long as it's being discussed in a respectful, productive manner, it's done its work. As for me, I think trans is just as valid an interpretation. Another person's gender/sexual identity should no effect on other people, yet it's managed to become a hugely divisive issue.

@ThePaulBunyanTrophy I don't know any Japanese, I'm just trying to resolve the discrepancy between what we saw happen and what the dialogue described.

As far as I'm aware, everywhere that English speakers use the word "panties", they use it specifically to mean just one garment, the one that covers a female's groin and buttocks area. This is in contrast to a word like "underwear" or "undies" which could plausible refer to one garment or many, and could be anything from panties to bra to stocking to camisole.

I support the themes in this manga, and what it may be trying to say, but I live in a society that aren't "like that", you know? The story is trying to convince the reader, a japanese reader, about things that in other places are just common place.

I thought Japan is less judgemental, but S.Korea is similar. Albino child can't have a normal life, everyone would stare, kids would tease, even grandparents would refuse to accept a child because she's not normal. Just google some shows where abnormal people share their experiences living in such a society.
We, westerners, have more "soul", so we can't comprehend such cruelty, but it's not a fantasy.
