Regarding the debate, its pretty much the same in the west no? I mean the term lesbian has a pretty neutral connotation but the term gay has a negative connotation. Thats why people call each other gay in online argument and not lesbian even though both pretty much mean the same thing

When I visited Japan, I remember the yuri sections of places like Animate and Tora no Ana being kinda subdued, mostly just a couple of signs showing "yuri here!" and that's it. The BL sections though, sometimes they took like half of an entire floor, or just a whole floor, filled with giant posters and merchandise lol.
