On r/manga, there are frequent discussions on whether threads should be made for when Jaimini’s Box and Mangastream release their own translations of Shounen Jump manga, especially since the official release through MangaPlus is usually only a few days later. The main focus, obviously, is to support the official release when available.

With that in mind, wouldn’t it also make sense to remove chapters that come from already-licensed volumes? Keep in mind I’m not calling for a purge here - what I mean, for example, is gradually removing chapters whenever a new volume release makes them obsolete. This way, not only do readers have to support the official release, but it also helps to keep attention off of MD so it doesn’t get DMCA’d like Batoto used to.

Granted, the whole controversy regarding scanslators recently has thrown a monkey wrench into all of this, so I’m not sure if a suggestion like this would fly. Is this sort of concept feasible?

@xyzzy

We allow scanlation of licensed manga because even though the localization will exist, not all users will have access to it (not in the same country it's localized in) and because other aggregators will continue to host the chapters regardless of their licensing status. We plan on competing with other aggregators, so we at least allow the scanlated versions while disallowing the official versions. If people are going to choose an aggregator, we hope they'll at least choose us. We link to official sources in our descriptions and hope people utilize them.

We get DMCA'd for series that don't even have a localization. Not hosting them doesn't stop the DMCAs

That makes sense. I know it was a highly unlikely request, but I appreciate you at least explaining to me why it can’t happen. I mean, I may not like it, but I’d prefer MD to do it over Kissmanga.

@xyzzy Keep in mind that a licensed version may or may not be more desirable than the scanlated version for various reason, so it wouldn't be fair to remove scanlated chapters to force readers to read the official version.
