Poison? Why would he have poison? Isn't it more like a Confusion from P***mon where he hurts himself when trying to act?

Also, I wonder if that's the P.E. teacher. (stereotype gathered from other works)

It's a reference to Dragon Quest, where when the hero party walks through swamps it can give the poison status.

When there's a game reference in manga but it's not about actually playing the game in the chapter, it's more often than not Dragon Quest being referenced with Final Fantasy cropping up occasionally. Actually being played by the characters in the chapter, Monster Hunter is the most likely candidate. Everything else will rarely end up in either category based on that author's own person references, but those three titles are the games to reference if you want your (Japanese) audience to pick up on it and relate and such. I'm not sure enough people care about DQ outside of Japan to pick up on all those references as easily, though. One of those things that a translation can't really help on its own.
