I remember back in the 90s there was a series of usenet posts made by a Japanese-born daughter of mixed parents. Her mother was Japanese, her father was an American (a member of the diplomatic service IIRC). She answered questions about and generally documented her growing up in Japan. She was like Yuuki in that while she had Japanese features, she had blonde hair. One of her posts was about her having just transferred schools. A teacher called her out for having "dyed" her hair. In front of her entire class, he called her a tramp and a whore and demanded she immediately stop dyeing her hair. In a moment of poor judgement she sarcastically replied "It's naturally blonde; should I dye it black then?"This outraged the teacher, who physically beat her. This became an Incident and she was forced out of the school. While her parents did not blame her and supported her, her peers and the school almost universally felt it was her fault for simply being different. There is a reason that the Japanese adage "The nail that sticks up is hammered down." uses phrasing that implies physical beating.
