This is another silly arc IMO, though the author did a good enough job making it flashy. It's like the entire Giant Guild never stopped to think about how the person they're trying to recruit. Thankfully, the author doesn't always drive the plot using his own (character's) stupidity.

@jikan_no_yuurei it's just people with power being arrogant. Since they have (or at least believed they have) the strength and manpower to overwhelm the other guild, they can just simply do a witch hunt to kill Grid over and over again preventing him from playing the game if he refuses (as they still believe Grid is a non-combat class)

Something similar will happen in like 300 chapters later so spoiler alert

when Kraugel changes to a legendary class and get his level reset, he'll be hunted down by a hater guild and while they failed to kill him, it prevented Kraugel from leveling up for quite some time.

Because it's a fight between guild and their history together.

Giant guild try to be n° 1 in X game but they never win against T guild.
They quit the game and now they try to overpower T guild in a new game.
For them it's just a fight between guild and the capacity of manpower is just a part of their strenght.
