In which the protagonist is a prototypical angsty, blatantly self-destructive miscreant who continuously makes bad life decisions (including some non-consensual stuff in the first chapter, for which I've added a sexual violence tag), and the love interest sometimes feels... a little less like a complete person, and more like the convenient object for the protagonist to, y'know, make bad life choices about, get emotional about, yearn for, etc. Well, I'm not saying the love interest is totally flat as a character, mind, just that they feel a little... convenient.
It does the whole angst-and-salvation thing very well, though. I mean, by-the-book, but good execution.
It comes close to seriously bringing up complex self-image (and self-confidence) issues, but sort of dances around the idea and ultimately punts on it. I'm not sure if it's too subtle, or whether the whole thing was just an accident from it searching for more things to be angsty about.
Oh, also, the final extra-chapter is purely some sort of bondage kink and can safely skipped if you, like I, know that's not your thing. Yeesh.
