@dingus I find that incongruence interesting. It's not even contradictory, it's just tribal thinking: you only empathise with those close to you. That's the problem Paul Bloom discusses in Against Empathy, and why we should be careful about letting our feelings dictate our moral values.

I think he differentiates between the general parasites and his friends’ killer by their motive. On one hand he saw natural predators that kill to eat to survive and get rid of “too many people” which he can accept. On the other hand something that killed solely for enjoyment of inflicting pain, he sees as unforgivable.
