It's a sign that the writing is pretty decent when it can get readers to feel some actual disappointment for a character that's slipping into self-destruction, and relieved when they show signs of improvement. Way better than some "Achilles in his tent" or existential-crisis-outta-nowhere bits. And no, I'm not reading ahead; this is fine.
