I really can't even fault the guy for having this sort of mindset. I mean this is a 12 year old kid having to deal with the death of what could be compared to family member or brother in arms.

In the end, Green won because he studied his opponent. He knew Karen was driven by her emotions and took advantage of that.
If Karen knew anything about Green beforehand she could have been able to react to Arcanine being returned and used Pursuit.
