Somehow I'm getting the vibe that the kings aren't exactly the good guys. The kings supposedly have great power to impose order onto the world, but when threatened by monsters they had to rely on a few humans who stepped forward (who they later ordered, rather than reward, to be their knights. When worded like that, it appears that the kings enslaved those who just wanted to help and had power that is useful to the kings.).
