He stayed behind, because the mage couldn't use teleport and ignite the charges, though he carried the means for enabling teleport again and had a method of ignition with him. Why didn't he hand them to the mage? Why didn't they prepared a secondary way to light the charges, like a fuse cord in first place? I'm not that sad, because it was a forced death.
