I think the Xia girl actually cared for the original body owner but with her stubbornness and unable to stand up against her family lead to a stagnated marriage. When cultivator showed up I think he only tried to help because of residual feelings the original body owner had toward her. But since he was a different person, a cultivator, domineering and controlling. He wouldn't want a stubborn woman who couldn't be honest he would rather find someone who was obedient.
