Some details from the novel: only slum kids (very well dressed here for some reasons) join Sheryl's gang cuz they can't join other gangs. Also the pendant Akira bought is cheap (well they bought it in the slum) so the old gang members thought she bought it herself for the bluff, part of the reason why they attacked.
