At least to me, the weightiest retort would be to humiliate the offender all to hell (if possible, ofc) and then compare that to the assholes (and by extent, his/her words') worth to it. Getting all pissy about it shows that the words hit home. Besides, it's not that bright to raise animosity over some meaningless chump --make them ashamed to be associated with them, instead of martyrizing the words.
