Dude the reactions to having seen someone dying in front of you in manga are all exaggerated...
It is not that big of a deal.
Especially when it is someone you believe to deserve it like a criminal, it is not without a reason that most of the shows in the old days revolved around executions and fights where people died or where they would kill animals for fun.

You make a generalization that you think is true like it is a fact.
Not everyone agrees that public executions are barbaric, not only there are still places that do public executions but there are people in places that don't do them that believe it should be done.
Again public executions were a past time in the past and even today the reactions that the characters in stories like this one have to it or to just seeing a person dying in front of them are exaggerated as it doesn't have that impact IRL.
