More info the comic version missed out
This happen in the same time frame where Roland order that knight to raise chicken and ducks, he was going through the captive knights to give them their ultimatums.
Ferlin initially thanked Roland when he entered and swore fealty, Roland was surprised and asked for explanation.
In truth, Duke Ryan basically raped Irene when Ferlin was out on duty before.
Ferlin eventually found out one he returned and planned to kill the Duke during the skirmish, but Roland did that first.
When Roland gave him the choice of working in the mine or becoming a teacher, he chose teacher.
Later on Irene chose to migrate to Border Town, because considering the Duke raped her when Ferlin was a famous knight, now that he's a captive and no longer as the knight title, there's going to be more men coming after her.
She initially thought she'd have to live in rather shabby condition, the usual treatment for losing side.
Instead she was surprised to not only hear Ferlin was not treated like what is the 'normal' treatment for captives, but he's also got a job with his own units in a housing building.
Once she heard the detail of teacher job, she also applied to become one.

@VerneJules YESSS!!!!!! I was pretty disappointed. The buildup for Irene coming to Border town was a good read.

Nope, while there's some enemy forces that do get close to Border Town, there's not ever a proper army that ever get anywhere near it.
I think the last human forces to even remotely get close to attacking Border town is Timothy's suicide army (a bunch of civilians/criminals forced to take the church's pills and sent in to weaken his enemies) and those get crushed so hard even the 'crazy' people run away in 'fear'
After that Roland went on the offensive and no human army, not even the church's, really stand a chance.

@suzubelle : I'd recommend finding the WN to read, there's a lot of details that the comic version skip out on that really makes the characters have more depth (see my earlier spoiler in this thread for example)

Lil Spoiler, not 100% accurate as I remember so take note
No enemy was able to penetrate Border town defense, but Longsong Stronghold will fall and be captured by Timothy ragtag soldiers and some noblemen who rebelled and armed with their own musket (but is greatly inferior by that time since Roland army will already be equipped with revolver rifle) and Longsong soon easily recaptured by Roland's army again. Roland then later launched a single bombing strike on the Greycastle audience room as a warning scaring Timothy shitless and also warn that he will come for him next.

Since you brought up loading faster (mobile or otherwise really), just run your images with either PNGGauntlet or Trimage. They both basically do the same thing and it won't degrade the quality one bit (every pixel is identical). But your images will be smaller, thus loading faster and also requiring less RAM (more an issue for game images but still nice) as a result of being indexed (instead of 32bit RGB) and otherwise compressed. In some cases, it will be a little smaller, and in some cases MUCH smaller. But always smaller.
Both programs are ridiculously easy to use. You can browse to the file, but the easier thing is dragging the folder itself onto the program. And with that it loads them all (even recursively). Trimage instantly gets to work. PNGGauntlet requires you to hit the optimize button. Let it do its thing while you go microwave a burrito or something. That's all you do, and your files are smaller when it is done. It can't be said to require effort, which is nice.
